Get Started with Ledger* | Ledger.com/start®
Welcome to the official getting started guide for Ledger — your secure hardware wallet for managing and storing cryptocurrencies. Whether you just purchased a Ledger Nano S Plus, Ledger Nano X, or another Ledger device, this guide will walk you through setup at Ledger.com/start.
Note: Always purchase Ledger devices from the official website or verified partners. Never use a second-hand wallet or one with a broken seal.
What Is a Ledger Hardware Wallet?
Ledger wallets are physical devices designed to secure your cryptocurrencies by storing your private keys offline. This means your digital assets are protected from online threats like hacking, phishing, or malware.
- Ledger Nano S Plus: Best for beginners and affordable.
- Ledger Nano X: Offers Bluetooth support for mobile users.
- Ledger Stax: Premium model with touchscreen and advanced features (optional).
Step 1: Go to Ledger.com/start
Start your setup by visiting the official page:
Ledger.com/start. From here, choose your device model and follow the prompts.
Step 2: Unbox Your Ledger
Inside your Ledger box, you should find:
- Your Ledger hardware wallet
- USB-C cable (or USB-A depending on model)
- Recovery phrase cards
- Instructions and Ledger stickers
Important: If your Ledger arrives with a pre-written recovery phrase, DO NOT USE IT. This means the device is compromised. Return it immediately.
Step 3: Download Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile app that allows you to manage your crypto assets. You can download it directly from:
Ledger.com/ledger-live.
- Available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
- Make sure to only download from the official site.
- Ledger Live helps install apps, update firmware, manage crypto, and more.
Step 4: Connect and Initialize Your Device
Once Ledger Live is installed:
- Connect your Ledger device to your computer using the USB cable.
- Choose “Set up as new device” if this is your first time.
- Select a secure PIN code (4–8 digits). Never share this code.
Step 5: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase
Your device will now show a 24-word recovery phrase. This is the most critical step.
- Write the 24 words exactly as shown onto the recovery sheet.
- Keep this sheet in a secure, offline place.
- Do not take pictures, screenshots, or store it online.
- Never share your recovery phrase — not even with Ledger support.
Warning: Anyone with access to your 24-word recovery phrase can take your crypto. Guard it like your bank PIN + key.
Step 6: Confirm Recovery Phrase
After writing it down, your device will ask you to confirm your recovery phrase by selecting the correct words in order. This ensures you wrote it down correctly.
Step 7: Your Device Is Ready
Congratulations! Your Ledger is now set up. The next step is to access Ledger Live and install the apps you need for the cryptocurrencies you want to use.
